What is Karate?

Karate is defined as a form of combat developed from Chinese Boxing by the inhabitants of Okinawa. Among martial arts, karate is the art of “empty hand”. ( Kara – meaning empty, and Te- meaning hand). However for me karate has been more than just a means of combat, self-defence, or fitness. It is a way of life.

As we have all heard the different concepts, and the dozens of theories about what karate is, it is only natural to be confused. From the magical to the mystical, to the spiritual, to the art of fighting without fighting, to the killing art, and so on, in reality, we have to come down to earth and start from the basics before we can transcend into thoughts or planes of superior order.

In training karate, one must strive for discipline, character building and integrity. Develop the self to its highest dimension possible, fostering an environment of brotherhood and respect.

Karate encourages personal development through education, and investigation on all related subjects i.e.. meditation, the arts, philosophy, history, professions and topics of personal interest. Thus cultivating the mind as well as the body. Both must travel in parallel lines, neither the mind nor the body straying behind.

Physically, karate can be an effective way of self-defence and combat, which relies in the use of the body’s natural weapons such as hands, feet, elbows, knees etc. In itself, karate is highly dynamic, teaching high levels of technical and co-ordination skills.

It is also an excellent workout, developing agility and strong flexible muscles with explosive power.

In learning karate, one will gain greater confidence, become calmer and have a better understanding in all other facets of our lives. By studying all aspects of karate rigorously, the true way of Budo will be found.(Bu – meaning warrior, and do – meaning the way).In conclusion, the training of karate-do.

As mentioned above, karate-do is a great way to maintain a healthy lifestyle, suitable for the whole family and all ages. An art in itself full of motivation, and an electrifying driving force to fulfill your life.
