New Students

Your First Class

Whenever we begin some thing new we find ourselves unsure of how to go about it. Here are some tips and info about beginning your training at Ken Shin Kan Karate.

What I need to know in advance?

As Karate is of ancient origin and has a long tradition there are certain rules of etiquette that are followed by those training in the art. Click here to read the Ken Shin Kan code of conduct. The main thing to remember is that courtesy in life is very important and the same is true in Karate. The Sensei (Teachers) have spent most of their lives dedicated to preserving and developing the martial art of karate for the benefit of others.

In the modern world martial art training has in many cases been relegated to being just another commodity that is traded in.

At Ken Shin Kan we do not treat the martial art in this way nor do we see students as just another income stream. We strongly believe in imparting knowledge for the betterment of peoples lives and hope that those training with us have the similar sentiments.

What should I wear?

Until you acquire the Gi (Karate Uniform) we advise that you wear loose comfortable clothing. Footwear is unnecessary as we train barefoot. Jewelry should be taken off prior to training to avoid any injury.

How can I prepare for class?

Not eating for at least an hour or two is definitely recommended as it will hamper you ability to train.

Also good hydration is recommended as the classes can be intensive.

What about my level of fitness?

By training in karate you will develop your fitness so it is not a pre-requisite to have a high level of fitness. Of course being in good shape prior to training will definitely be a bonus for you.

Do I have to join after using my introductory lessons?

No. You are free to choose your own path in life and have no obligation to continue training with us if you think karate is not for you. However if you do join we expect you to be dedicated to training and give it your best.
